Lab description.

Synopsis:
Since we cannot give you the physical heart, we are giving you 17 “like there” videos of human heart assessments from multiple patients and multiple viewpoints — from inside body to the heart removed; including both external and internal examination. Add to that enough guidance and support to learn through discovery. And this is your lab. Consider it an invitation into the autopsy suite (or anatomy lab or surgical suite) to learn directly from the body.

Details:
The Lab is a guided discovery activity similar to an actual dissection with the body in front of you. Students will come to the body and the heart to make their own observation of human heart anatomy — as though they are there with the patient performing the dissection themselves. Videography is “first person.” Audio balances didactic and discovery modes — sometimes explanatory, sometimes with visual annotations and guideposts only; and sometimes the student are left to quietly make their own observation. There are a mix of accompanying illustrations and on-video notations to assist with structure identification. The process is interactive, encouraging student engagement and ownership of the learning process. Engagement activities include sketching (via integrated digitized sketch pads); drag-and-drop structure labelling; pre-and post-topical assessments (to allow students to see their growth and to own their own the evidence-based concept of human heart anatomy (one they discovered themselves through their own observations); and a final assessment (exam).

The cost is $149/educator login and $149/10 student logins. Access is for one (1) week. A parent-guardian – student authorization form is included. The event can be arranged anytime at your convenience. You can access the lab multiple times across each day of access. (Please see below for additional tech details.)

Total of videos: 17
Topics:

Heart within the chest – pericardial sac – heart connections – external anatomy – coronary arteries – internal anatomy (chambers, valves, flow of blood)

FAQ’s

Should I give each student a login or put student into groups?

It’s up to you.

Access to the Lab may be arranged individually or in groups.

Instead of a heart on a tray, you will work with the human video on a device. But the group/lab concept is the same.

Decide what works best for your school and classroom, set-up, and available devices.

Once you decide how many logins you want, you’ll be ready to make your purchase.

(See here for breakdown).

Make your purchase here.

Once I complete all 3 steps, when will I be able to run the lab.

Once you have completed all 3 steps, please allow 1 week.

And we will send you your standard instructional email.

Once you have your instructional email, you can run the event anytime at your choosing.

The Lab will sit there ready for you and will not expire.

What’s in the standard instructional email?

You will receive your login details through the standard instructional email.

The standard instructional email will also provide lab preparation, lab starting instructions and lab follow-up instructions.

You can use your login details anytime you wish to run the Lab. The login details will not expire. And will sit there until you are ready to run the lab.

How do I give myself and students a login.

The login details will include a coupon code and registration link.

When you are ready to run the lab, use the coupon code to register yourself and any students.

Just proceed to the link and follow through for yourself and each student like you’re making a purchase. Add the coupon code during checkout and it will make the price go to $0 since you have already paid.

For example, if you purchased 10 students logins, the coupon code will work 10 times to set up each student login. Plus one more for yourself.

You will add your own and each student’s username and password with each registration.

Once everyone has a login, you are ready to run the lab.

When you’re ready to start the lab in class, pass the usernames/passwords out to the students so they may login for the lab.

How long is access to the Lab?

Access to the lab is for 1 week.

Login and logout as much as you wish over the course of the week.

The week starts with the first teacher OR student login (see below).

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to set up your first login when you are ready to start your lab. The week access will end after your first login registration. This means that if you set up you your teacher login at 12 noon on a Thursday, the entire lab will end at 11:59 am the next Thursday — regardless of whether you have arranged your student logins.

We recommend setting up your student and teacher logins together at the start of the Lab. You do not need to give out the student logins at the beginning. You can, if you wish, set aside the first couple days for your own preview of the Lab. And then give out the student logins. But this way, you will have the student logins ready and ensure you have full access for the week.

Case use: the first year, we recommend setting aside 2 days for teacher access to preview the lab; and 3 days to run the lab in class. (2 days will span the weekend to make the total of 7 days). For example, if you preview the lab on Monday and Tuesday for yourself, you can run the lab Wednesday, Thursday, Friday with the students.

How do I start the lab?

The informational email will include instructions on how to start the lab.

First set up your and your students’ logins.

Then, login and go to the lab page here and click Start Learning to begin!

That’s it.

And you can proceed through the lab.

It is interactive and engaging; and will guide you through.

How many devices will I be able to access.

You can login to any device you wish.

But you may only login to one device at a time.

If you are logged in on one device and login to a second device, the site will log you out of your first device.
